√ Central Germany, Hadamar Memorial

HadamrIn Hadamar, Germany there are two very impactful sites: one being a war-time extermination camp for mentally and physically disabled people; and the second is a chapel which displays the continued hope and faith people had throughout the war.

The “Gedenkstätte Hadamar” or Hadamar Memorial, is there to remember the roughly 15,000 people that were killed there. I was not able to enter the memorial because I was late, however it seems to do a good job explaining what happened. Also, you can walk at any time around the back and see the garage where the people arrived. This way, the community did not know much of what happened there.

Secondly, there is a small.chapel dedicated to Mary, Jesus’s mother next to a beautiful garden. In the outside walls of the chapel, people have placed their prayers, thankfulness and much more. It goes back beyond World War II, and it helps bring to life the impact the war had on people’s souls. Also, it shows the role spirituality plays in times of conflict.
